Secure Shell, also known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol employed to execute commands on a remote web server or to exchange info between a web server and a client. Since the data exchanged by the 2 sides is encoded, a 3rd party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a favorite means of managing a web hosting account. The commands that could be executed are determined by the type of hosting service. On a shared web server, in particular, the options are limited as you shall not have root access to the website hosting server, so you can just create/move/delete files, set up and unpack archives, import and export databases, etc. These are all actions which are performed within the shared hosting account and do not need a higher level of access. By using a virtual or a dedicated server, you will be able to install server-side software or to restart the hosting server or just a specific service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted via a command line, and if you do not use a UNIX-like OS, there are a lot of apps for other OSs, that you can use to connect to the remote server as well.

SSH Telnet in Shared Website Hosting

SSH access is offered with all Linux shared website hosting which we provide. With some of them, it is provided by default, while with others it is an additional upgrade that you can include with several clicks from your hosting CP. You can obtain SSH access through the section related to it in which you shall also find the details that you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You will be able to pick the password which you shall use and, if needed, you'll be able to modify it with a couple of mouse clicks from the same location. All the commands that may be used with our shared plans are listed in a help article alongside relevant instances. If the SSH access function is permitted for your account, you'll also be able to upload files using your preferred FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is offered by default with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you are able to include it from the hosting CP if required - even only for the current month. In either case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the feature with one click from the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you'll see the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You shall also find a box in which you can easily type the password which you want to use, because it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you may also change it as often as you want. The full list of the commands which can be executed inside a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and several instances. An extra function after SSH access is activated shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this sort of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Web Hosting

You shall be able to use SSH to manage your content irrespective of which Linux virtual private servers you select when you sign up, because all our packages provide this feature as standard. You'll not have to add or activate anything by hand - the moment your server is ready and you receive the Welcome email with the login info, you'll be able to connect and begin working on your Internet sites or any software that you'd like to set up and run on the server. You shall have root-level access to the VPS and because the account will be separated from all of the other accounts on the physical web server, you will be able to do anything you want with no restrictions. You can install any application which you need and that shall work on a Linux-based web server, restart any software server (web, database, game, media, etc.) and work with your files and databases fast and easy.
